Understand Operating System much? First Operating System was developed by AT&T Bell Labs which was UNICS system and after a year it finally become Unix. It rewritten in C making it portable to different hardware.
But why are there Linux? It's because Unix was protected under commercial licenses which mean it's not an open-source. Linux came under GNU which mean open-source because it prevent biggest legal team from winning all! Unix will dominate if Linux not exist. And since Linux was open-source, it grew speedy.
Linux found everywhere you can imagine webpages, ATM, motorcycle, milks machine, traffic lights, robot, mobile handset (android), NASA and etc.
MacOS is from Unix where it was protected with licences while other Linux such as Ubuntu was open-source and its mean everything you done under Linux will be freed. Where is Microsoft? It was totally from the other line.
